Who We Are
We Develop the Person Before the Position
Hagan Institute of Leadership (HIL) is a leadership development institution. We help young people, emerging leaders and professionals discover who they are, build the capacity to lead, and translate their potential into meaningful impact.
Too often, people are handed responsibility before anyone has helped them become ready for it. HIL exists to close that gap — forming character, judgement and competence early, and strengthening them at every stage of a leader’s life.
Why HIL Exists
Leadership Arrives Early. Preparation Often Arrives Late.
A prefect leading a dormitory. A graduate managing a team for the first time. A professional promoted into a role no one trained them for. A young person deciding who they will become.
Each of these moments is a leadership moment. Each requires self-understanding, sound judgement, the courage to communicate and the character to carry influence well. Yet most people meet these moments with knowledge, but without formation.
HIL was established to change that. We believe leadership is not reserved for those who hold titles. It begins with identity, is shaped by daily choices, is strengthened through practice and is proven in the way a person takes responsibility for people, decisions and outcomes.
So we do not simply teach leadership. We help people understand who they are, develop the capacity to lead, and use that leadership to create impact — in their schools, workplaces, families, organisations and communities.
Purpose, Vision & Mission
What Guides the Institute
Our Purpose
To help people discover who they are, grow in character and competence, and become leaders capable of making sound decisions and creating meaningful impact.
Our Vision
A generation of leaders — in Ghana, across Africa and beyond — who carry influence with character, lead with competence and serve with conscience.
Our Mission
To design and deliver practical, experiential leadership development that forms the whole person — from the classroom to the boardroom — and follows that growth over time.
What We Believe
Six Convictions That Shape Everything We Do
These convictions inform how our programmes are designed, how our facilitators teach and how the Institute itself is governed.
Identity Before Influence
Sustainable leadership grows from the inside out. A person who understands their values, strengths and purpose leads with steadiness rather than insecurity.
Character Is a Competence
Integrity, responsibility and self-control are not soft extras. They determine whether talent can be trusted with authority.
Leadership Is Learned by Doing
Insight becomes capacity only when it is practised. Our participants think, decide, communicate, fail safely, reflect and try again.
Development Is a Journey
A single event can inspire; it rarely transforms. We follow participants beyond the programme through mentorship, assessment and follow-up.
Service Is Leadership Practised
Leadership is ultimately measured by what it does for others. Structured service gives young leaders a place to apply what they learn.
Excellence With Integrity
We hold ourselves to the standards we teach — in the quality of our programmes, the care of our participants and the way we steward trust.

Our Heritage
Rooted in a Decade of Service
HIL was founded by Rev. Fiifi Essilfie-Hagan, who also founded The Love Jar Foundation in 2017. For close to a decade, LoveJar has served vulnerable families, patients, prison communities, widows, children and students across Ghana.
Through that work, one need kept returning: people — especially young people — need more than encouragement. They need to be formed into leaders who can carry responsibility well. HIL was established as a partner institution to meet that need with the structure, rigour and continuity it deserves.
The two institutions share a founder and a conviction: that lasting change happens when people are developed, not merely helped.
We don’t just teach people how to lead. We help them understand who they are, develop the capacity to lead, and use that leadership to create impact. The HIL Commitment

Leadership Development for Every Stage
Different stages of leadership call for different experiences. Each HIL pathway is designed for where people are now — and where they are going.

Held to the Standards We Teach
An institution that develops leaders must itself be led well. HIL is governed with clear oversight, safeguarding at its centre and a commitment to transparency with participants, parents, partners and the public.
- Governance Policy — how the Institute is directed, overseen and held accountable.
- Safeguarding — how we protect every young person and participant in our care.
- Code of Conduct — the standards expected of everyone who represents HIL.
- Complaints & Feedback — how to raise a concern and what happens next.
