Leadership Grows Stronger in Partnership

No institution develops leaders alone. HIL works alongside partners who share our conviction that people should be formed — not merely informed — and that leadership is proven in service to others.

LoveJar Foundation × HIL

From Learning About Leadership to Practising It

Leadership that never leaves the classroom stays theoretical. Leadership that is practised in service becomes character.

The Love Jar Foundation has spent close to a decade reaching vulnerable families, hospital wards, prison communities, widows, foster homes and schools across Ghana. Hagan Institute of Leadership exists to form leaders. Together, the two institutions give young people something rare: a structured path from learning about leadership to practising leadership through service.

Through this partnership, selected HIL students — particularly participants in the Emerging Leaders Programme — have opportunities to take part in structured volunteer and community-impact activities alongside LoveJar’s teams.

Participation is structured, supervised and accompanied by reflection and assessment, so that volunteering becomes a deliberate part of each student’s leadership development rather than a one-off experience.

What Students Do

Age-Appropriate Opportunities to Serve

Activities are matched to each student’s age, maturity and readiness, and always take place under appropriate supervision.

01

Community Service

Hands-on service that meets real needs in the communities students live in and around.

02

Outreach Activities

Taking part in organised LoveJar outreaches — preparing, serving and learning from the people they meet.

03

Social Impact Projects

Identifying a need, designing a response and seeing it through as a team, from idea to outcome.

04

Youth Empowerment Initiatives

Encouraging and supporting other young people — leading by example among their peers.

05

Volunteer Assignments

Defined roles with clear responsibilities, so students learn reliability, punctuality and follow-through.

06

Team-Based Community Challenges

Collaborative challenges that test planning, communication and teamwork in real settings.

How It Works

Service With Structure

Every service experience follows the same disciplined cycle — so the learning is captured, not lost.

Prepare

Students are briefed on the activity, the community they will serve, their responsibilities and the standards of conduct expected of them.

Serve

Students take part under the supervision of trained HIL and LoveJar staff, with clear roles and appropriate adult-to-student ratios.

Reflect

Guided reflection helps students connect what they experienced to the leadership lessons of the programme — empathy, responsibility, teamwork and initiative.

Assess

Facilitators observe and assess each student’s contribution, feeding into their ongoing leadership assessment and mentorship.

Safeguarding First

Every Young Person Protected

Service experiences are designed with student safety at the centre. Parental or guardian consent is obtained before participation, activities are risk-assessed, students are never left unsupervised, and every adult involved is bound by HIL’s safeguarding standards.
