Equal Opportunity Policy
Leadership potential exists in every community. HIL is committed to fairness, dignity and equal opportunity for everyone who learns, works, volunteers or partners with us.
1. Our commitment
HIL treats every person with dignity and fairness. We do not discriminate on the basis of sex, age, ethnicity, tribe, nationality, religion or belief, disability, social or economic background, or any other characteristic unrelated to a person’s ability to take part or do the work. This commitment reflects the respect for human dignity, equal opportunity and fair treatment set out in our Governance Policy.
2. Participants
HIL programmes are open to participants who meet the stated programme criteria, such as the age and school level for the Emerging Leaders Programme. Selection for opportunities — including service activities and special programmes — is based on fair, consistent criteria, and sponsors or partners do not influence individual selection inappropriately.
3. Recruitment & people
Recruitment, development and advancement at HIL are based on competence, character and fit with our purpose. Roles involving young people also follow safer recruitment practices, as described on our Careers page and in our Safeguarding Policy.
4. Access & affordability
We make reasonable adjustments so that people with disabilities can take part fully — see our Accessibility Statement. We also work with partners and sponsors to extend places to young people who could not otherwise afford to attend; organisations and individuals can support this through Partner With Us.
5. Unacceptable behaviour
Discrimination, harassment, bullying and victimisation are not tolerated in any HIL activity, and are addressed under our Code of Conduct.
6. Raising concerns
If you believe you have been treated unfairly, please tell us through our Complaints & Feedback process. Concerns raised in good faith will be handled seriously and without retaliation.
